INSTRUCTIONS:
OTHELLO IS THE 8 X 8 VERSION OF THE ORIENTAL GAME OF GO, A COUSIN OF GOOD
OLD TIC-TAC-TOE (IT IS ALSO KNOWN IN SOME CIRCLES AS REVERSI). IT IS EASY
TO LEARN, BUT THERE IS GREAT ROOM FOR SKILL & EXPERIENCE.
TOMMY'S OTHELLO FEATURES A COMPLETE BOARD MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AS WELL AS THE
CAPABILITY FOR THE COMPUTER TO LOOK AHEAD UP TO 9 MOVES WHEN IT IS PLAYING.
THE OTHELLO BOARD IS NUMBERED AS FOLLOWS: ROWS A..H, COLUMNS 1..8.
THE INITIAL CONFIGURATION IS ALL BLANK EXCEPT FOR THE 4 CENTER SQUARES.
TWO PLAYERS PLAY. ONE TAKES THE WHITE PIECES AND THE OTHER TAKES THE BLACK.
THE COMPUTER CAN PLAY THE PIECES OF 0, 1, OR BOTH PLAYERS.
ON YOUR TURN YOU GET TO PLACE A PIECE OF YOUR COLOR (WHITE OR BLACK) DOWN
ON THE BOARD IN AN EMPTY SQUARE TOUCHING AN ENEMY PIECE.
TRY TO PLACE YOUR PIECE SO THAT IT OUTFLANKS YOUR OPPONENT, CREATING A
HORIZONTAL, VERTICAL, OR DIAGONAL RUN OF OPPOSING PIECES, WHICH TURNS
THEM INTO YOURS.
YOU MUST CAPTURE AT LEAST ONE ENEMY PIECE IF IT IS POSSIBLE.
THE GAME ENDS WHEN:
1. ALL THE BOARD SQUARES ARE FILLED.
2. ONE PLAYER IS REDUCED TO NO PIECES.
3. NEITHER PLAYER HAS A LEGAL MOVE.
4. THE MOVE LIMIT 100 IS REACHED (A LOT OF FORFEITS!).
TO ENTER A MOVE: TYPE IN THE ROW AND COLUMN NUMBERS IN EITHER ORDER, E.G.
"B7" OR "7B". TO FORFEIT YOUR MOVE, ENTER "0".
BACKSTEP/UNDO BACKSTEP: IF YOU ENTER "." FOR YOUR MOVE, THE GAME WILL
BACKSTEP; TO UNDO THE BACKSTEP, TYPE "/" FOR YOUR MOVE.
WARNING: YOU CANNOT BACKSTEP WHEN THE NUMBER OF HUMAN PLAYERS IS ZERO! IF
YOU WANT TO BACKSTEP, YOU MUST CHANGE MODES FIRST (SEE FOLLOWING).
MODES: WHEN THE PROGRAM STARTS UP, YOU ARE ASKED FOR THE NUMBER OF 'HUMAN'
PLAYERS (0-2). IF YOU ENTER "0", THEN THE COMPUTER PLAYS AGAINST ITSELF,
WHICH SERVES AS A DEMO OF THE PROGRAM. IF YOU ENTER "1", THEN THE COMPUTER
(PLAYER 1) PLAYS AGAINST YOU (PLAYER 2). IF YOU ENTER "2", THEN 2 HUMANS CAN
PLAY AGAINST EACH OTHER. TO CHANGE THE MODE, YOU MUST USE FUNCTION KEY 2 AS
DESCRIBED BELOW.
MATCH SCORE FILE:
FILE OTHELLO.SCR, AUTOMATICALLY MAINTAINED BY THE COMPUTER, REMEMBERS HOW
MAY GAMES EACH PLAYER (1=WHITE OR 2=BLACK) HAS WON. ERASING THIS FILE RESETS
THE MATCH SCORES TO 0,0.
FUNCTION KEYS: THE FUNCTION KEYS F1-F10 HAVE THE FOLLOWING FUNCTIONS:

F5 DEBUG MODE TOGGLE (IN DEBUG MODE, THE COMPUTER DISPLAYS
INTERNAL DATA WHEN IT IS DECIDING WHAT MOVE TO MAKE)
F6 QUIT THE GAME
F7 DECREASE COMPUTER LOOKAHEAD LEVEL
F8 INCREASE COMPUTER LOOKAHEAD LEVEL
NOTE: THE COMPUTER LOOKAHEAD LEVELS ARE 0..9. AT LEVEL 0, THE COMPUTER
MERELY WEIGHTS THE BOARD SQUARES AND TAKES THE MOVE WITH THE HIGHEST
SCORE; AT LEVELS 1..9, THE COMPUTER ACTUALLY LOOKS AHEAD 1..9 MOVES AND
TAKES THE MOVE THAT GIVES THE HIGHEST SCORE. BEWARE THAT HIGHER
LOOKAHEAD LEVELS TAKE EXPONENTIALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS OF TIME!
F9 LOOKAHEAD MODE. THIS FN KEY TOGGLES THE LOOKAHEAD MODE
BETWEEN 'EXHAUSTIVE' (ALL LOOKAHEAD MOVES ARE TRIED),
AND 'MINIMAX' (ONLY MOVES THAT INCREASE THE SCORE AT A
GIVEN LOOKAHEAD LEVEL ARE TRIED). THE MINIMAX MODE SAVES
**MUCH** TIME.
YOU CAN ESCAPE FROM THE LOOKAHEAD PROCESS, TAKING THE BEST MOVE FOUND
TO THAT TIME, BY HITTING THE ESC KEY.
SINCE YOU CAN'T CHANGE THE LOOKAHEAD LEVEL AFTER THE LOOKAHEAD PROCESS
FOR A MOVE HAS STARTED, YOU MUST ABORT THE MOVE BY HITTING THE ESC KEY,
THEN THE NEW LOOKAHEAD LEVEL WILL BE REGISTERED.
F10 DISPLAY THESE INSTRUCTIONS
ARROW KEYS: THE UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS ON THE NUMERIC KEY PAD CHANGE THE
INTER-MOVE DELAY. THIS VALUE, IN SECONDS, IS SHOWN BELOW THE
MOVE BUFFER IN THE LOWER CENTER OF THE SCREEN. (THE DOWN ARROW
SPEEDS UP THE GAME, THE UP ARROW SLOWS IT DOWN.)
DISPLAYS: THE BOARD IS DISPLAYED IN THE UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER OF THE
SCREEN. AT THE UPPER LEFT OF THE BOARD IS DISPLAYED THE NUMBER OF PIECES
ON THE BOARD. TO THE RIGHT OF THE BOARD ARE DISPLAYED THE SCORES OF WHITE
(AT THE TOP) AND BLACK (AT THE BOTTOM): LEADING DOWN FROM THE TOP AND
UP FROM THE BOTTOM ARE THE 6 PREVIOUS SCORES FOR YOUR INFORMATION.
THE MOVES ARE DISPLAYED AT THE RIGHT OF THE SCREEN. BELOW THEM ARE DISPLAYED
THE COMPUTER LOOKAHEAD LEVEL, THE NUMBER OF MATCHES WON BY WHITE AND BLACK
IN THE CURRENT SESSION, THEN THE TIME THE LAST MOVE WAS STARTED, THEN THE
CURRENT TIME.
REPLAY FILES: WHEN YOU SAVE A GAME ON A FILE, THAT FILE MAY BE REPLAYED
MOVE BY MOVE. TO LABEL THESE REPLAY FILES FOR YOUR OWN USE, YOU MAY PUT
NOTES IN THEM ON LINES BEGINNING WITH A ".". THE FIRST NOTE LINE MUST
COME AFTER THE REPLAY FILE PREAMBLE CONSISTING OF THE NUMBER OF PLAYERS &
GAME DURATION IN SECONDS (LINE 1), PLAYER 1'S NAME (LINE 2), AND PLAYER 2'S
NAME (LINE 3). THESE NOTE LINES ARE IGNORED WHEN READING IN THE FILE.
TO ABORT A REPLAY IN PROGRESS, HIT THE ESC KEY.
TITLE LINES: YOU MAY PUT IN UP TO 2 TITLE LINES WHICH ARE DISPLAYED WHILE THE
GAME IS BEING REPLAYED. A TITLE LINE BEGINS WITH A T IN COLUMN 1 AND MAY
COME ANYWHERE IN THE REPLAY FILE AFTER THE PREAMBLE LINES.
TO SKIP THE STARTUP SHOW: HIT THE <ENTER> KEY TWICE INSTEAD OF ONCE WHEN
CALLING THE PROGRAM UP FROM DOS.
